Divided Worlds

Looks like that closure might not be so permanent!

Having taken a piece of advice left by an anonymous visitor to the C-Box, I have placed an ad on ProBoards Support and hope to see an influx of new members in the near future. If this works, the icing on the cake would definitely be to see some of our original members return; especially those from the previous sites and those whose characters are important to the storyline, though I will most likely be deleting permanently inactive accounts and, if they are for canon characters, be putting those characters up for adoption.

I sense a serious revamping coming up, ladies and gentlemen. I hope to God we can revive Divided Worlds - and I want you all to be a part of it.

It was Tara’s least favorite time of the week, but a time she could little to avoid. Her mother demanded a minimum of one letter a week. The letter was to be delivered no later than every Sunday night and be no shorter than five standard parchment pages. Not to mention the contents of the letter were to include a brief summary of Tara’s schoolwork, social meetings, and a half page of research on anything of her mother’s choosing. This week’s research was on basilisks, something Tara rather enjoyed researching.

With her house scarf wrapped tightly around her neck and matching gloves pulled over her hands, she made her way to the owlery. She passed few students on her way as she always made the trip just before dawn. This way her owl would have had just enough time to rest after hunting.

“Chalawan!” she cupped her hands around her mouth and called for her pet owl. She never stepped foot in the owlery. It was far too dirty for her to ever desire peeking in. Moments after the name was spoken, the great horned owl appeared at her side as if he had been patiently waiting for her. “You know what to do. Now go.”

She kissed the bird gently on the head before tying the note to his leg. After shaking the parcel a few times, he spread his wings as was out of sight before Mina could reach into her pocket for a treat. She shook her head and smiled as the owl was nothing more than a dot on the sky and there nothing at all. Her eyes shifted towards the rising sun and she decided to enjoy the quiet serenity of the scene before her just a bit longer. Not quite ready to return to the halls where the annoyances of her schoolmates and fake friendships awaited her.

The object resting on Nkechi's gloved hand was most certainly not an owl. In fact, it would be difficult to classify it as an animal at all. Well, at least, not yet. Right now, it was just a collection of long pieces of silver, some of which were jointed, some of which were just floating. However, you could tell by the almost bloodthirsty glow in Nkechinyere's eyes that something was important about this collection of instruments, one of which was just a floating Sickle in place of the creature's right eye.

And that was that this one really had a chance of becoming alive. Not that she was planning on breaking Gamp's laws or anything. It didn't have to become sapient. Just sentient enough that she could infuse it with some lovely Muggle tricks. However, after long hours spent in the library, Nkechi became blissfully aware that she knew next to nothing about real owls.

After her daily morning run, she was always full of ideas, and today was no different. She coaxed the owl-shaped collection of objects onto her shoulder by manipulating its magically-captured desire to remain upright, and shucked off the conjured glove, which returned to dust after leaving her cocoa-colored hand. She planted one combat boot on the first step to the Owlery, then began to climb. By the time she was close to the top, her pace was almost matching her run from earlier. It was only quick reflexes and some sort of intuition in the dark that kept Nkechi from bowling Tara over entirely.

She leapt to one side, body going from elongated to sharply tucked in moments, and landed in a crouch, starting to ginga back and forth on the steps, one hand over the wand in her shoulder harness before realizing that the other student was just that. The instruments bound on her shoulder clacked together almost as if protesting their owl-shaped bonds, although at this point Nkechi knew better than to start anthropomorphizing.

What little bliss and serenity nature had provided her was quickly washed away. Try as anyone might, but there wasn’t any eliminating the annoying thud of thick boots upon steps. She closed her eyes and relied solely on her sense of hearing as the unknown person made their way up the steps. From what she could hear, the person had come to a stop not too far from herself.

“In the human world where we have evolved to have a little thing called manners, people introduce themselves instead of eerily creeping up on others,” her eyes slowly opened as she turned around to face her company. A frown quickly formed on her face as she saw that it was a girl wearing combat boots. Her eyes examined the girl’s every aspect from head to toe before Tara had come to her first judgment of the girl.

“What in bloody hell is all of that junk? You look like you are up to something,” Tara leaned against the stone wall, careful not to push too hard back or risk toppling over the side. There was a look of pure suspicion, but a taunting smirk. She, very intentionally, reached up to push a strand of hair behind her ear where her wand was tucked. Exchanging the hair for her wand before allowing her hands to sink back down to her sides.

Although Tara could never approve of a woman wearing combat boots, there was something intriguing about the girl. She seemed a bit looney, but mischievous. For now, she was acceptable to converse with. Whether she continued to be such depended on how the girl responded. More importantly, her blood status which Tara had every intention of uncovering before allowing the girl to leave.

"Unfortunately it doesn't take such a higher consciousness to register surprise," Nkechinyere met Tara's eyes with calm, gregarious hazel ones. "The limbic system's been present since when reptiles and mammals were one and the same. Excellent for jumping, though." She indicated the distance between Tara and herself with her right arm. Then she crossed that distance, extending her small hand toward the other girl. "Nkechinyere Burgess," she looked up, very aware of the eight or so inches' difference in their heights. "Ravenclaw seventh."

"Better than being up to nothing," Nkechi shrugged, and the 'owl' swiveled to balance abruptly. "That'd be boring." She smiled openly. "Now, if you mean to imply that I'm up to no good, you could just say so." Tara might notice that Nkechi was always moving, always shifting, but it would be hard to tell whether it was in response to environmental cues or internal ones. "If not, forgive me for impugning your honor." The smile only grew.

She looked over at her collection of scrap metal. "As for the junk? Junk, mostly." She scrutinized a part of the owl and reached up to tweak at it as she talked. "Eventually, I hope it will be a good medium for magical algorithms and logic gates, to the point where it should be able to mimic simple animal behaviors. Computing based on the environment it senses, that kind of thing. Then what I would really like for it to do is to learn--that's something we've tended to stay away from with magic, whether it's Transfiguration or Charms or something Darker."

There was pollen in the still morning air, and Nkechinyere was starting to feel it. She rubbed one of her eyes, knuckle just brushing the anti-eyebrow piercing. She was working on sensing where people's eyes fell with aurokinesis, but it didn't take light manipulation to be able to pick up the amount of time Tara's eyes spent on her boots. She wondered vaguely if that was going to be a problem, and if the many piercings were, either. Blood status, Tara's real concern, hadn't even crossed her mind.

"Giving something the ability to learn really isn't that difficult a venture..."

A corrupt voice rode the air into the Owlery, dark in its nature but with a certain Machiavellian eloquence. Following it up the stone staircase and into the room came a tall figure, clad in a black robe with the face hidden under a heavy hood. As he ascended into the Owlery, maintaining some distance from the female occupants, a malevolent chill came over the girls, surpassing the natural cold of the room and reaching into their very souls. It was as if an air of evil surrounded this robed figure.

"A few modern AI systems are capable of learning almost anything," the figure - male, if the voice was anything to go by - continued. "But I suppose artificial intelligence is out of the question for the likes of you. Still, even if magic dare not reach into such principles, I know of an energy that can, and has done so in the past." Having announced himself, he looked from one girl to the other, the movement of his eyes going unseen beneath the hood. Their response, for better or worse, would no doubt be interesting to behold.

Her mouth dropped as she prepared to properly introduce herself to her female companion, but the sound that filled the air was not of her voice. Had it not been for the odd sensation of evil, she would have quickly closed the distance between her and the intruder and had her wand to his throat. Interrupting Tara was something that was unacceptable. But today, things were different. The cold chill wrapped around her vocal cords and squeezed, leaving her snappy insults to go unspoken.

She remained still, the only movement in her eyes as they shifted from the new presence to the old. Tara wondered if the two knew each other, or if it just happened that three strangers who were extremely stuck on themselves happened to bump into one another outside the owlery. Perhaps fate was trying to make life a bit easier on her by presenting her with two people with the qualities she was seeking. Though, the question of their purity was still up in the air.

“You,” she nodded towards the newcomer, no longer mentally phased by his evil aura despite an uncountable number of goosebumps among other physical distress signs. “What energy is this you speak of?”
